AUTHOR’S NOTE · pp. 4–7
A Country Boy With Questions
I am Shane Bone. I grew up in central Mississippi and spent most of my school years at South Leake High School in Walnut Grove. Around our part of the world, that school could be looked down upon. I thought of it differently. It was one of the best parts of my first eighteen years. I learned plenty inside the classrooms and a great deal outside them.
A career followed that took me through construction, engineering work, business systems, information technology, large projects, tough problems, and people who could do remarkable things. Some of them had advanced degrees. Some had calloused hands and no diploma worth displaying. I learned from both.
I am writing because I look at the world we inherited, the world we are building, and the one the next child will inherit, and I cannot stop asking questions.

PROLOGUE · pp. 10–13
The First Breath
Before you learn your own name, before you understand a single word, before you recognize a flag or a border, you have already inherited a world somebody else made.
A child opens its eyes. There are faces above it. Warmth. Hunger. A voice. A touch. Not a constitution. Not a passport. Not a history book. Not a machine explaining which civilization this is and what that civilization expects.
To every one of these children, the world outside the window will become ordinary. Each child enters at the temperature of its own time.

CHAPTER 12 · pp. 50–51
The First Acceleration
Writing changed time.
Before writing, information survived by being remembered and repeated. Human memory can be astonishing, but it is vulnerable. A story changes. A teacher dies. A sequence is forgotten.
Writing allowed a dead person to speak. Printing multiplied the effect. Ideas reproduced faster. A discovery could reach more minds. Those minds could criticize it. Improve it. Combine it with something else.
Humanity slowly built a machine for collective thought. We did not call it artificial intelligence. We called it civilization.
